Skimming Walls and Ceilings

Do you have damaged walls that make it impossible to decorate?

We offer a type of plastering know as ‘skimming’ – which might be the answer to all of your problems…

What is skimming?

Essentially, skimming is a top-coat of plaster which is used to cover-up superficial blemishes and restore the surface of a wall or ceiling to a smooth and level finish. Typically skimming is used where old wallpaper has been removed and caused surface damage, or where there are minor scuffs and abrasions to the surface of a wall or ceiling. In the photos above you can see before and after pictures showing some examples of our skimming projects.

In many cases, we have also fitted new coving to give that extra luxury finish, leaving the surfaces smooth in readiness for the decorators. We like to think we make the decorators life easy – giving them an un-spoilt blank canvass to paint on – as you can tell by the crisp edges of the finished painted surfaces!

In the photos you can also see where we skimmed over adhesive covered walls and made-good walls damaged over the years by fixtures and fittings or damp. The photos also show a ceiling which had previously been Artexed. We removed the artex and skimmed the ceiling to give the smooth plaster finishes you can see.

Skimming Walls And Ceilings

Most commonly we skim walls and ceilings in the following circumstances:

  • Superficial damage to interior walls and ceilings: Where the surfaces have been chipped and scuffed over the years or there have been some repairs or alterations.
  • Preparing to decorate: After the debatable joy and arduous task of peeling off wallpaper; which has taken some of the plaster off the walls, or to cover the residue of glue on the walls.
  • Tiling: If you have taken tiles off the wall and it has caused damage to the surface, or if you need to achieve a smooth surface to apply them to.
  • Artex removal: Artex is no longer fashionable, so we are often asked to remove or cover it and make the ceilings look smooth and even.

In all cases there is a only certain amount you can achieve using a filler and rubbing the walls down. Even after your great efforts the surface may still look uneven. This is when skimming the surface comes into its own, because it gives you a consistent, clean and smooth surface to which you can then apply paint, wallpaper or tiles. Skimming is ideal if you are intending to paint the surfaces of your walls, as it is an effective way of achieving smooth contours on your walls and hiding minor blemishes that would become more noticeable and even exaggerated by covering them with paint.
